Walther P1, 9x19mm

The P1 was an improved model of the classic P.38. The slides on the P.38s had shown a tendency to crack, so the P1 was fitted with a reinforced slide to eliminate this problem. Also, the frames were made of aluminum alloy to make the gun lighter and easier to carry.

This P1 was made in 1966, and it’s an early import by Interarms. The import stamp is small and discreetly applied, which makes the gun more desirable than later imports that are stamped on the slide or the front strap. It’s in excellent condition with some minor holster wear, and the bore is perfect. The crossed out “BH” marking shows that it once belonged to Austrian army (BH = BundesHeer). The magazine is of the correct type, but date stamped 2/76. The gun has a rack number painted on the left grip panel, and many people like to clean it off or replace the grips. However, we see this as part of the history, so we have not made any attempt to remove it. We can replace them with a clean set of original grips, if the buyer prefers this.

Collectors usually advise not to shoot a P.38, due to the problems with the slide. This has made the P1 a popular option for those who like to shoot a P.38, but don’t want to take a chance breaking a WWII pistol. They are also becoming more and more popular among collectors, so the supply of nice surplus guns has just about dried up and prices are bound to go up in the future.
