Tikkakoski M91/30, 7.62x54r
The Finnish M91/30 rifle is a copy of the Russian M91/30, and they were built from a mix of Finnish and Russian parts as an expedient way to meet the wartime demand. They already had the more refined M39 in service at the time the production of the M91/30 started, so it is assumed that they made this decision because they had large amounts of captured Russian M91/30 rifles on hand. The Finnish variation incorporated a few changes, most noticeably the spliced stock, the non-hooded front sight bead and the improved sling swivels.
The most common variation has the older style hex receiver, while this one is built on the somewhat scarce round “low wall” receiver. It also has the Finnish stock with the characteristic “potbelly”, complete with the factory finger joint. The receiver is marked with the Tikkakoski factory symbol, the Finnish Army “SA” stamp and the year of manufacture. It has obviously been in storage for a long time, and since there was still storage grease in the bore we suspect that it has never been fired since it left the storage facility in Finland.
This rifle has a beautiful “as found” appearance, with aged, brownish grease on the metal parts. We have chosen not to clean it, since we simply think it looks better with this patina. However, the bore has been cleaned for inspection, and it’s mirror bright without any pitting or discoloration.
A very nice example of the Finnish armament effort late in WWII!
